O IBC-Br é uma forma de avaliar a evolução da atividade econômica brasileira e ajuda o BC a tomar suas decisões sobre a taxa básica de juros, a Selic.
O índice incorpora informações sobre o nível de atividade dos três setores da economia: indústria, comércio e serviços e agropecuária, além do volume de impostos.
O indicador foi criado pelo BC para tentar antecipar, por aproximação, a evolução da atividade econômica. Mas o indicador oficial é o Produto Interno Bruto (PIB – a soma de todas as riquezas produzidas no país), calculado pelo Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística.
