A Sociedade Brasileira de Pediatria (SBP) divulgou nota pública alertando para a necessidade de atenção redobrada diante da detecção de um surto de poliomielite na Venezuela.
No documento, a entidade orienta pediatras a estarem atentos a possíveis casos de paralisia flácida aguda e adequada investigação. A preocupação, segundo a SBP, se deve ao aumento do fluxo de imigrantes pelas fronteiras brasileiras, em especial nos estados do Norte.
Casos
Na última quinta-feira (7), a Sociedade Venezuelana de Saúde Pública informou a notificação de casos de paralisia flácida aguda no estado de Delta Amacuro, na comunidade La Playita del Volcán, Parroquia Juan Millán, município Tucupita, cujos habitantes pertencem à etnia indígena Warao.
O primeiro registro foi em uma criança de 2 anos e 10 meses, sem indicativo de vacinação prévia. Após a confirmação, a vigilância epidemiológica encontrou novas ocorrências desse tipo de paralisia, de recente aparição, também em crianças, em uma comunidade vizinha, que continuam sob investigação.
Doença
De acordo com o Ministério da Saúde, a poliomielite, também conhecida como paralisia infantil, é uma doença infectocontagiosa viral aguda, caracterizada por um quadro de paralisia flácida de início súbito.
A transmissão ocorre de pessoa para pessoa, pela via fecal-oral (mais frequente); por objetos, alimentos e água contaminados com fezes de doentes ou portadores; ou pela via oral-oral, através de gotículas de secreções (ao falar, tossir ou espirrar).
Não existe tratamento específico – todas as vítimas de contágio devem ser hospitalizadas.
A vacinação é a única forma de prevenção da poliomielite. Todas as crianças menores de 5 anos de idade devem ser imunizadas conforme esquema de rotina e em campanha nacional.
No Brasil, não há circulação de poliovírus selvagem desde 1990.
